WHAT IS DEWORMING?
Deworming is the giving of an anthelmintic drug (a wormer, deworm, or drench) to a human or animal to rid them of helminthes parasites, such as roundworm, flukes and tapeworm. It is also known as as worming, drenching or Dehelmintization.
Are the infestation of Parasites serious in the Pets?
Intestinal worms can be a serious problem in young puppies and young kittens. Hookworms can cause anemia and roundworms can lead to poor growth and development.
In adult dogs and cats, however, intestinal parasites are only occasionally life-threatening. Debilitated animals or those that have a weakened immune system are more likely to experience severe intestinal parasitism and show clinical signs due to their worms.
Heartworm disease is a life-threatening parasite, spread by mosquitoes and causing significant damage within the heart and lungs. Heartworm disease is considered to be one of the most serious conditions seen in small animal
How often do you deworm a puppy?
Young puppies may be born with worms, and are still developing their immune system. For this reason, puppies should be dewormed in their early life, most often at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 weeks of age. Once your puppy reaches 12 weeks, you can continue to treat your puppy every three months for life with an effective all wormer.
Mothers may also pass worms on to their puppies, so it is important they are treated during mating, and before the birth of their puppies.
How often do you deworm a kitten?
Kittens should be treated every 2 weeks starting from 3 weeks of age till 8 weeks of age, then monthly to 6 weeks of age
Adult cats should be dewormed every 1-3 months.
Most Common mistakes while deworming your pet?
- Forgetting to re-administer anti-parasitic medication a few days later.
- Administering an anti-parasitic without knowing the weight of pet.
- Believing that a pet is to be dewormed every six months or only once a year.
- Administering the anti-parasitic orally, without ensuring that it was swallowed.
- When keeping more than one pet, deworming only one of them.
- Medicating your pet on your own.
